Academic Governance


The academic authorities of the Sophia University Institute are personal and collegial. The personal authorities include: the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the President of the Institute, the Vice-President of the Institute. The collegial authorities are: the Institute Senate and the Campus Council. 



The Chancellor of the Institute is the Archbishop of Florence, Giuseppe Betori.

The Chancellor represents the Holy See to the Institute and promotes its identity,  goals and development; in addition, he fosters the communion of the Institute with the local and the universal Church. 



The Vice-Chancellor of the Institute is the President of the Focolare Movement: currently, Dr. Maria Voce.

The main responsibility of the Vice-Chancellor is to see that the Institute develops in conformity to its nature and goals, and to oversee the decisions made by its governing bodies.


The current President of the Institute is  Dr. Piero Coda.

The President ensures and promotes communion among all the members of the academic community, directly governing and representing the Institute. He/she is nominated every 4 years and can be re-elected for one further term. 



The current Vice-President of the Institute is Dr. Daniela Ropelato

The Vice-President, chosen by the President among the permanent faculty of the Campus, is confirmed by the Vice-Chancellor and assists the President to carry out his/her responsibilities, also filling in for him/her when he/she is not able.
